AGE UK'S 'LEND A HAND' CAMPAIGN INVITES DARLINGTON'S CARING COMMUNITY TO VOLUNTEER

12/03/2024

Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington is calling on Darlington residents to step forward and volunteer, even if just for a couple of hours a week, especially for information and support work as part of its new ‘Lend a Hand’ campaign in the run-up to Volunteers Week in June.

This crucial volunteer work includes answering telephone calls and being the ‘welcoming face’ at reception at the charity’s Beaumont Street headquarters in central Darlington, providing invaluable information and advice to older people and their families.

As the demand for the charity’s services grows, especially in areas such as dementia care and Meals at Home, the need for compassionate and committed volunteers has never been more critical. The local charity has an active volunteer base of 50 people who provide weekly or occasional support to groups, activities, day care, the café and Meals at Home as well as reception and Information and Advice services.

Kevin Cooper, interim CEO at Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington, said: “Age UK’s volunteers are the backbone of our organisation, offering not just support but also companionship and a friendly ear to those in need. Even if someone can help, or ‘lend a hand’ for an hour or two on a regular basis, that would be hugely beneficial.”

Volunteering with Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington is an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of older people in the community. Whether it’s providing advice over the phone, welcoming visitors at reception, or supporting the charity’s dementia care facilities, volunteering time and skills can significantly impact those it serves. Volunteering offers a flexible opportunity to make a significant impact, accommodating various schedules and commitments.

Kevin continued: “We welcome individuals from all walks of life and ages to join our team of dedicated volunteers. Whether you have a few hours a week or month, or can commit more time, your contribution will be greatly appreciated.

“Training and support will be provided to ensure you feel confident and valued in your role. Volunteering with Age UK can be an incredibly rewarding experience, and one that our existing volunteers gain a great deal from.”

Pauline, who volunteers at the charity’s reception desk, explains: “Being a volunteer here has opened my eyes to the challenges faced by older people and the difference a bit of kindness and the right information can make. It’s about more than just answering questions; it’s about connecting on a human level and showing that someone cares.

“Even if anyone interested in volunteering can spare only an hour or two a week to lend a hand, it makes a real difference.”

Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington provides a range of services and activities to help older people in the region stay connected, informed, and independent. These include information and advice, home support, and social groups.
