GMI completes first half of £13m state-of-the-art business park six weeks ahead of schedule

29/02/2024

GMI Construction Group has completed the first of two units that comprise Trebor Developments’ £13m advanced business park in Cambridgeshire six weeks ahead of schedule.

As a result, logistics giant DHL International (UK) Ltd, which signed a long-term lease for the 126,689 sq. ft unit at Lightning Park, near Huntingdon, has already moved in. The second speculative 32,200sq.ft unit is due for completion within weeks.

The development, which is rated BREEAM ‘Very Good,’ is on a prime commercial site, located just off the A1(M) and close to the newly improved A14.

Lightning Park, which is approximately a mile from the centre of the market town, featured 10 acres of land that Trebor acquired from St John’s College in 2021. GMI began main construction work last summer, in collaboration with UMC Architects and Ridge and Nolan Associates.

During the construction phase, GMI introduced hybrid solar generators as an alternative to traditional diesel generators to reduce the project’s carbon footprint.

Gareth Jones, GMI’s Managing Director for the Midlands, said: “Completing the first phase of Lightning Park ahead of schedule is testament to excellence and efficiency on behalf of all those involved. We are pleased to hand over the first unit ahead of its planned completion date.”

Greg Dalton, Development Director for Trebor, added: “We are delighted at the progress which has enabled DHL to move in sooner than expected. It’s a shining example of how strategic development and a collaborative approach can yield positive results.”

A smaller 32,638 sq. ft unit, named ‘Lightning 32’, was developed speculatively and is now also completed and available for immediate occupation.

GMI has also recently completed the transformation of the former James Cond print works in Birmingham a number of weeks ahead of schedule. Created for University College Birmingham, it is a centre for sustainable construction, providing state-of-the-art courses and facilities for construction students.
