Essex children’s home rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted

17/01/2024

An Essex children’s home, operated by Salutem Care and Education, has been rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted following a recent inspection.

The exact location of Ridgemont House is not being revealed to protect the identity of the vulnerable children who live there.

The inspection team looked at the overall experiences and progress of the children, taking into account how well they are helped and protected and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.

The report noted that ‘Children are making good progress. Children have positive relationships with staff and enjoy spending time with them. Staff talk about children with warmth, and can articulate their needs’.

The inspector also stated that ‘Children are making progress with their education. Each child has a creative timetable to ensure that daily routines are maintained. Timetables combine formal learning in core subjects with informal education led by staff. Local school placements have been identified for children who have previously missed formal education. When children remain out of formal education, learning is provided through an online learning resource. This means that children are provided with positive learning outcomes and structure to their day’.

Salutem Care and Education has made a significant investment in its refurbishment and upgrade.

It is a four-bed service that represents a transformative step in enhancing the standard and quality of care provided by Salutem. Children and staff have been successfully relocated from an older, less suitable building to this purposefully designed facility, specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals supported.

Key features of the newly upgraded home include a spacious garden area with a basketball court, providing an inviting and recreational space for the children to engage in physical activities. Additionally, the facility is equipped with an activities/education room, fostering an environment that supports both academic and personal development.

For young people on the cusp of adulthood, a transitional flat has been created, offering a semi-independent living experience and facilitating the acquisition of essential life skills to ease their transition into independence.

Karen Jackson, Divisional Director Children at Salutem, said: “This is a great report for Ridgemont House, which has recently re-opened following a major refurbishment.

“It’s testament to the dedication and care of the staff who so obviously go the extra mile to ensure the young people they support are happy and safe.

“Our core values centre around providing a safe place and fulfilling opportunities for all the children we support, enabling them to attain the best possible outcomes.

“It is great to see this feedback from Ofsted, which demonstrates the hard work and positive impact we have on our children”.

“Well done to everyone.”
