3D SCANNING TECHNOLOGY ON TRIAL AT LANDSCAPERS

Wilkinsons Lansdcapes is trialling the use of innovative 3D LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology as part of its surveying and design process, recruiting an experienced CAD (Computer Aided Design) engineer to support its development.

Simon Wilkinson, managing director of Wilkinsons Landscapes, believes that the use of the technology is a first for landscapers in the North East, and will allow his team to create accurate models of gardens so they can create eye-catching 3D design plans and accurately plan their use of materials to reduce waste.

Best known for its application in agriculture, archaeology and sea bed mapping, use of LIDAR in the landscaping industry is not wide spread, though Wilkinsons Landscapes estimates that it reduces the time spent on the design and planning stage of a project by 90%.

To support the development of the technology, Wilkinsons Landscapes has employed Carla Hill, who studied engineering and has experience using CAD. She is improving the process by which Wilkinsons can create project plans and plot the use of materials to reduce waste - and the cost to customers.

Simon Wilkinson, managing director of Wilkinsons Landscapes, said: “I’m really excited to be rolling out this LIDAR technology. There isn’t another domestic landscaping firm around here that has this as a standard offering and means that we can produce incredibly accurate plans for customers that are a true reflection of what their finished garden will look like.

“The technology is by no means perfect, but we’re working hard to improve how we use it and constantly getting better. One of the biggest advantages is being able to reduce the cost to customers through improved accuracy of our materials planning and the time spent surveying a site.

“I’m a bit of a geek and love staying up to date with technology. We’ve been developing this for a while and gone through a few different scanning programmes before settling on this version. I’m always looking at ways to improve what we do, either at the nursery or at a customer’s property.

“Eventually this technology will become commonplace, but at the moment it is best known for big mapping projects like discovering lost cities in the Amazon or finding shipwrecks on the seabed. Using it to create a 3D model of a garden in North East England is still pretty novel.”
