JOY SMASHES 100-MILES IN A 100 DAYS CHARITY CHALLENGE

16/05/2022

A member of the Bannatyne Health Club Sutton Coldfield has raised nearly £650 in aid of the Epilepsy Society.

Joy Kirk smashed the charity’s 100 miles in 100 days challenge by completing a massive 505 miles.

She did it in honour of her eldest grandchild, fifteen-year-old Luke, who suffers from the health condition.

Joy, aged 68, who has been a member of the Princess Alice Retail Park club, for eight years, praised her personal trainer, Ben Williams, and fitness instructor, Bill Kirkwood, for their support and encouragement during the 100 days.

She said: “Ben and Bill were a great help to me in achieving this. My eldest grandchild suffers from epilepsy, which is a life changing and debilitating condition, not just for him but the whole family. The money raised will go towards research.

“Most of the miles were done outside in my local country park, but whenever I attended the gym for personal training or bootcamp I walked on the treadmill to add to my total.

“When the weather turned nasty, I walked on the treadmill for miles – earlier this month (APRIL) I covered more than 13 miles in just two sessions.”

Joy added: “I will wear my Challenge T-shirt with pride. I am really proud of what I have achieved especially as I am due to celebrate my 68th birthday next month.”.

Dean Fellows, the health club’s general manager, said: “What an absolutely incredible achievement by Joy.

“Everyone at the health club is blown away by of her outstanding fundraising efforts for a fantastic cause that is so close to her heart.”

The Epilepsy Society threw down the gauntlet earlier this year – the only rule being that the 100-mile target was completed in less than 100 days. How participants covered that distance was up to them – it could be running, walking or cycling or whatever they chose.

The charity is dedicated to transforming the lives of people living with epilepsy through research, advocacy, and care.

In the UK, one in a 100 people are living with epilepsy with a third of those having seizures that cannot be controlled by medication.
