Beyond Housing has begun its demolition work in Church Lane North estate, Grangetown, as part of a £16m regeneration scheme.

The project, delivered in partnership with EQUANS, will provide home improvements for existing Beyond Housing customers, along with new affordable homes for rent, shared ownership and rent to buy.

A selected number of homes have been kept empty for several years ahead of the planned demolition to make way for new roads, which will improve the overall layout of the estate, as well as the much-needed new homes.

By increasing the types of property available, Beyond Housing aims to more accurately meet diverse housing needs in the area and provide a more inclusive affordable housing offer for the estate and the wider community of Grangetown.

Beyond Housing has already begun to roll out improvements to existing properties on the estate, including new roofs, external wall insulation and cladding to improve their energy efficiency and appearance

Bob Spedding, Regeneration Manager at Beyond Housing said: "It’s fantastic to see the selective demolition works begin on site. This is a key milestone in the delivery of our ambitious regeneration scheme at Church Lane North.

“Whilst the estate is physically in need of improvement, the local community is strong and resilient. We wanted to harness that community spirit for the regeneration scheme and minimise displacement for residents, by choosing to improve their homes whilst they continue to live there rather than demolish large parts of the estate and create a need for relocation. It’s great to see these improvements to existing homes coming along too – they are making such a difference already.”

Richard McLean, Project Manager at EQUANS, said: “We’re making a number of improvements to the area, including two parkland areas that we’re going to be developing, which will benefit the local children.

“Regeneration of the properties will include external insulation and new doors, which will help bring the bills down. We’re also using local labour, and going to be involved with the primary schools, getting the kids involved and days out, which will be fantastic.”

Catherine Smith, local resident, said: “Beyond Housing’s been brilliant with everything because we’ve waited a long time for this and now it’s all happening and everything’s going to look lovely when it’s all done.”
