POOLEY NEW BRIDGE WINS PRESTIGIOUS STEEL DESIGN AWARD

08/10/2021

Pooley NEW Bridge over the River Eamont near Ullswater in Cumbria, has received a prestigious Award in the 2021 Structural Steel Design Awards, sponsored by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) and Trimble Solutions (UK) Ltd.

Pooley New Bridge is the permanent replacement for a 250-year-old crossing that was destroyed in 2015 by Storm Desmond.

The team behind the new bridge included Knight Architects; structural engineers GHD; steelwork contractor S H Structures; and main contractor, Eric Wright Civil Engineering. The work was completed for Cumbria County Council.

The Structural Steel Design Awards, now in their 53rd year, are sponsored by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) and Trimble Solutions (UK) Ltd.

They recognise the excellence of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland in the field of steel construction, particularly demonstrating its potential in terms of sustainability, cost-effectiveness, aesthetics and innovation.

Commenting on the project, the judges said: “Ingenuity, innovation and beauty combine in this remarkable replacement for the Grade-II listed stone bridge swept away by floods in 2015. The UK’s first structural stainless steel road bridge, the solution utilises expertly fabricated high strength low nickel alloys to achieve a low maintenance and highly efficient structure. Striking contemporary design in the heart of the National Park.”

Dr David Moore, CEO of BCSA, said: “It is a pleasure to celebrate the ingenuity of our steel construction industry, and the shortlisted projects were all of a great standard.

“Congratulations to the whole team behind Pooley New Bridge, which is both sensitive to the surroundings and hugely innovative.

“After a difficult year, the Structural Steel Design Awards show that the steel construction industry here in the UK and Ireland is still innovating, and I look forward to seeing more outstanding projects in 2022.”

NOTES FOR EDITORS

1.The Structural Steel Design Awards

The scheme, introduced in 1969, recognises the high standards of structural and architectural design attainable in the use of steel and its potential in terms of sustainability, cost-effectiveness, aesthetics and innovation.

The Awards promote the innovative use of steel by rewarding outstanding projects to stand as an example to others. The Awards are run annually and are open to structural steelwork projects both in the UK and overseas, which employed a UK or Irish steelwork contractor in their construction. Projects must have been completed in the two years prior to the year of entry. The independent judging panel for the SSDA comprises representatives from the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Royal Institute of British Architects
