NEWCASTLE CARE HOME RESIDENT CELEBRATES 102ND BIRTHDAY
The resident of a Newcastle care home has celebrated her 102nd birthday in style surrounded by family and friends.
Betty Hall has lived at Kenton Hall Care Home, in Kenton Lane, since September 2020.
She worked, making aeroplane parts, at Vickers Armstrong, which famously is mentioned in the Geordie anthem, The Blaydon Races.
At her birthday party, which was attended by her son Peter, she was showered with cards, gifts, flowers, and balloons, and received a card from the Queen.
Home manager Steve Robson said: “Betty is a much-loved member of the Kenton Hall family, and it was a real honour to host a party to mark the incredible milestone of her 102nd birthday.
“She has had an interesting life having worked at one of Tyneside’s most iconic firms and loved to dance and swim in her spare time.
“Betty has made many new friends since moving to Kenton Hall, where she enjoys taking part in events and activities organised by staff at the home.
“She is an inspiration to us all.”
Betty says her secret to a long life is ‘good food and good company.’
She was born on January 24, 1920, at her grandma’s house in Amelia Street, Elswick, to proud parents Ethel and John Brown.
Until the age of 14, she attended Cruddas Park School after which she ventured out into the world of work.
She worked weekends at British Home Store until she was 16 when she got a job at Vickers Armstrong making aeroplane parts
She married her husband Norman on January 2 1944. Their son Peter was born four years later.
Norman served with the Australian RAF Squadon. When his fellow servicemen returned home, he stayed in the UK and joined the Fleet Air Arm, which operated aircraft from Royal Naval ships.
Sadly, Norman died in 1995, the year after the couple celebrated their Golden Wedding.
Kenton Hall, located about four miles outside Newcastle city centre, provides residential and nursing service for up to 60 people, some of whom are living with dementia.
The home, which is part of the Solehawk Group, is rated good by the industry regulator, the Care Quality Commission.
