HIGH SHERIFF OF COUNTY DURHAM PLEDGES TO SUPPORT LOCAL COMMUNITIES

26/09/2023

The High Sheriff of County Durham used a special Matins ceremony marking her appointment to affirm her commitment to supporting charitable causes through the County Durham Community Foundation (the Foundation).

Anne Elliott, the former CEO of Latimer Hinks Solicitors in Darlington, who previously served as the Under Sheriff for several years, championing charitable initiatives, something she has re-affirmed her commitment to as she starts a year-long term in the historic deputy post.

The ceremony saw community and charity leaders, dignitaries – including Judges and Sheriffs from the four counties of the North East and North Yorkshire – along with well-wishers come together, representing the united spirit that embodies the region.

This 1,000-year-old ceremonial occasion, steeped in tradition and grandeur, celebrated Anne Elliot's appointment as the High Sheriff of County Durham. She said: "High Sheriffs are appointed by the Monarch, and I am privileged to be one of the first cohort appointed by King Charles III. I am honoured and humbled to serve as the High Sheriff of County Durham. My years as Under Sheriff have prepared me well for this role, and I am excited to work closely with the County Durham Community Foundation to support their vital work and assist local causes that are close to my heart."

A recent report, produced by Health Equity North in conjunction with the Foundation highlights the urgent need to address the pressing challenges faced by people in the region. The report titled "County Durham and Tees Valley: Health, Wealth and (Unequal) Opportunities to Thrive" underlines the stark inequalities affecting the health and well-being of individuals in the area. The report reveals the significant health divide that exists, leading to shortened lifespans, diminished life opportunities, and substantial economic losses for thousands of people in County Durham and the Tees Valley.

Michelle Cooper MBE, Chief Executive of the Foundation, said: “Our commitment to enriching the lives of individuals and communities in the region is stronger than ever. With Anne’s support, and that of our existing supporters, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of more people who are battling the inequalities our region faces.

“The report makes those inequalities crystal clear, it’s now time to act. With the compassion and support of people like Anne, we will keep pushing to fight poverty, and keep creating opportunities for people to have brighter, better lives tomorrow. Whether it’s supporting foodbanks or dance classes, we’re determined poverty will not keep stealing the futures of people here in our region.”

As High Sheriff of County Durham, Anne Elliot will lead by example, embodying the values of integrity, compassion, and community engagement. Her appointment signifies a new chapter in the rich history of County Durham, one that promises to uphold the traditions of the past while embracing the opportunities of the future.
