Exhibition to reveal latest proposals for Milburngate House regeneration

05/02/2016

Embargoed until 5th February 2016 00:01hrs

Members of the public will be able to view the latest proposals for the regeneration of Milburngate House at a special exhibition in Durham City on 17 February.

Ahead of a planning application being submitted to Durham County Council in March, local people will have the opportunity to contribute to the finalisation of the plans for the site.

The ambition of the Milburngate development consortium is the creation of a high quality mix of homes, offices, bars, restaurants and a cinema.

Recently the consortium, comprising Carillion, Arlington Real Estate and Richardsons Capital LLP, confirmed it had agreed heads of terms with cinema operator, The Everyman Group to locate its first multi-screen boutique cinema within the development.

The public exhibition is being held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, adjacent to the Milburngate site, on Wednesday 17 February between 12pm and 7pm. The public can also visit www.durhamriversiderenewal.co.uk, which provides information about the project and will be available to view from 17 February.

Allan Cook, Managing Director of Arlington Real Estate, said: “The constructive, positive feedback we have already received from the people of Durham has been a very important part of the development of our ideas for Milburngate. This exhibition will enable visitors to see how our proposals have evolved and offer their views to help us deliver the North of England’s newest and most significant waterside regeneration project.”

Neil McMillan, Development Director at Carillion, said: “We are on track to turn our plans into reality transforming the site into a mixed-use destination of regional significance and we look forward to sharing our developing ideas with the people of Durham. There is a real appetite among leisure operators, businesses and residents for a high quality, premium development in Durham City that sets itself apart from common high street schemes and we are confident our proposals exceed that demand.”

The development consortium consists of Carillion, Arlington Real Estate and Richardsons Capital LLP.

Arlington Real Estate and Carillion also work in partnership on another flagship County Durham development, DurhamGate. Located five miles south of Durham City, DurhamGate is on the site of Black & Decker former UK headquarters and, at 60 acres, is the largest regeneration project in the North East.

The project includes the regeneration of Freeman’s Reach and the redevelopment of Milburngate House, which are on adjacent banks of the River Wear in the heart of Durham City.

According to the Sunday Times 2014 ‘Best Places to Live’ listing:

“Durham is a lovely place to live. Beneath its glorious cathedral, you’ll find pretty cobbled streets stuffed with little independent shops and great watering holes, a beautiful river that carves its way through dramatic walls of rock and greenery, and some attractive house stock – along with a thriving buy-to-let market, thanks to all those students. One of the nicest places to live is South Street, which looks directly onto the cathedral and castle, and which inspired Sir Walter Scott. Many of its terraced houses are grade II listed; prices range from £400,000 to more than £1m.”
