CARE HOME OFFICIALLY RECOGNISED FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES PROGRAMMES

26/04/2022

A Basildon care home has been honoured by health officials for its emphasis on helping residents keep physically active.

Mundy House, in Church Road, has been awarded a gold medal by NHS England & Improvement – East of England Regional Team in an initiative raising awareness of keeping older people as physically fit as possible.

The Winter De-conditioning Games focused on supporting elderly people to keep active and reducing physical and psychological function decline.

The home has had a longstanding emphasis on making a difference to the physical health of its residents. This has included being part of Essex County Council’s Prosper initiative which concentrates on areas including the prevention of falls and pressure ulcers by focusing on strength and balance and nutrition and hydration.

As well as sessions to keep its residents active, Mundy House now has created physical activity ambassadors in the home who are being mentored by occupational therapists from Sport for Confidence with input from Essex County Council’s Prosper support officer.

To further improve and expand its activities programmes, representatives from Mundy House attended a workshop, run by the Prosper team and Active Essex, looking at strength and balance exercises and chair yoga.

The home, which is part of Larchwood Care, also has become involved in Basildon Brentwood Clinical Commissioning Group’s ‘dancing on prescription’ programme.

Residents also are being encouraged to move more with the help of pedometers and have been set the challenge of walking the equivalent length of the Essex coastline.

Josi George, Mundy House manager, said: “It is fantastic to be officially recognised for the range of exercise sessions we have in place to help keep our residents physically active.

“We pride ourselves on providing different physical activities that are specially designed to be followed by those living in a residential care home setting and always are looking at ways to expand and improve this offering.

“Our residents really enjoy taking part in these fun exercise sessions. The Dancing on Prescription has been a particularly popular with residents and staff.”

Mundy House, which caters for older people, also provides respite and palliative care, is rated good by the industry regulator, the Care Quality Commission.
