HCMS PRAISED AFTER TURNING AROUND CARE HOME

The UK’s leading care home management and consultancy business Healthcare Management Solutions (HCMS) has been praised by the Care Quality Commission after transforming a service that had previously been rated Inadequate.

Operating under its Silverlake Care brand, HCMS has put in place a rpbust governance framework that has included changes in policy and practices which have seen Windermere House – previously known as The Granary – secure a strong GOOD rating from the independent inspectorate.

Since taking over in 2021, HCMS has also invested in continuing development opportunities and training for the home’s staff with a focus on delivering bespoke treatment that meets the individual needs of its residents.

HCMS operates homes on behalf of care business owners, investors, banks and insolvency practitioners. Over the years, its specialist turnaround service has helped hundreds of services to improve both financial and operational performance – and saved many from almost certain closure.

After an in-depth review of the service, HMCS’s highly experienced team develops a tailored home turnaround and development plan, before working with the client to implement the necessary changes. This may include supplying an experienced and capable temporary manager while recruitment for a long-term replacement is undertaken and the existing staff undergo training in the latest best practices.

HMCS’s success in transforming care home services has resulted in a strong reputation with the regulatory bodies, which ensures that services are given the breathing space required to implement sustained improvement during any turnaround phase – as it has achieved at Windermere House.

During an unannounced visit to Windermere House, which offers residential and respite care and rehabilitation for people with acquired brain injuries, the CQC inspectors reviewed all areas of the service and reported that the home was praised by residents, their families and staff.

In their in-depth report, the inspectors found ‘the service was fully adapted to meet peoples’ needs’ and ‘care was person-centred and promoted people’s dignity’. They observed a ‘kind and caring culture’ and saw that residents ‘interactions with staff… were relaxed and demonstrated trust and confidence’

One member of staff was quoted in the inspection report as saying: ‘There have been a lot of changes recently, but the new owners and managers are really good and are making positive changes.’ This was echoed by the registered manager, who told inspectors: ‘We are now implementing systems and processes that are sustainable. I am fully supported by the new provider. I have seen a boost in morale since the new provider.’
