TREE PLANTED IN MEMORY OF CARE HOME’S MUCH-LOVED CAT
A Taunton care home has planted a tree in memory of one of its much-loved pets.
Bruce the cat was a firm favourite with residents of Oake Meadows in Wyvern Road. Aged nine, he had lived at the home for four years.
Katrina Ball, manager of Oake Meadows, which is owned by Larchwood Care, said: “The residents adored Bruce and were very sad when he crossed over the rainbow bridge.
“He was such a character and brought happiness and love to our residents, so we thought it was only fitting to remember him in some way.
“We decided that planting a tree would be ideal as we all can pay our respects and look back over fond memories as we watch it grow.
“Bruce had a feline pal, Petal, who, while okay, has seemed a bit lost since he died. Therefore, we are arranging an outing to a local rescue centre to find her a new friend.
“Pets and animal therapy can play an important part in the health and mental wellbeing of care home residents. Stroking a dog or a cat has been shown to have a soothing effect, by lowering blood pressure and the heart rate, and to lift people’s mood.
“Bruce curled up and purring on a resident’s lap would raise a smile and bring a sense of comfort, relaxation and calm.”
Oake Meadows provides looks after elderly people on a permanent or respite basis, specialising in residential, nursing and dementia care. It has an overall rating of good from the industry regulator, the Care Quality Commission.
