Hollywood arrived in Tyneside as acting legend Tim Roth’s latest film, which was filmed entirely in the North East, premiered in the region.

The Tyneside Cinema, in Newcastle, gave film fans, investors and those involved in the movie the first look at ‘The Liability’, which attracted investment from Middleton Enterprises and the North East Creative Content Fund, a partnership between Northstar Ventures and Northern Film & Media.

Produced by independent production company Corona Pictures and starring Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction legend Roth, former Skins star Jack O’Connell and Talulah Riley, whose credits include St Trinian’s, the film tells the story of an aspiring hitman who is thrown together on an assignment with a veteran assassin who wants to retire.

With shades of Get Carter, The Liability is a thriller and a darkly comic portrayal of a son looking for a father. Throughout this cinematic road trip across the North East, the audience encounters twists that will reveal a black secret that some people will kill to protect, and others will kill to uncover.

North East landmarks and locations in the film include Dunstanburgh Castle, on the Northumberland coast; the Port of Blyth; Ryhope Pumping Station; Hartlepool; Darlington; Morpeth; Seaton Carew; and Hexham.

Richard Johns, of Corona Pictures, who produced the film, started his career in the North East.

He said: “We chose the North East to film ‘The Liability’ because it is unique and beautiful, and is very under-used by film companies. As well as North East investors, our crew and supporting cast were recruited largely from the region, and they had a fantastic work ethic and were highly skilled. Tim Roth really enjoyed his time in the region, managing to get out and about as much as possible. Corona Pictures would love to film here again.”

Jeremy Middleton, CEO of Middleton Enterprises, said: “I was very pleased and excited to make my first investment in a film, particularly one starring such a talented and well-respected actor as Tim Roth. Supporting the region’s industries, particularly an emerging sector such as film, is extremely important, and I am very proud the region will be showcased on the silver screen in this way.”

‘The Liability’, starring Tim Roth, Jack O’Connell and Talulah Riley is on general release from May 17.
