Major investment at Tees Valley’s largest taxi firm has accelerated with the firm completing a £1m investment ahead of schedule.

In April, Boro Taxis spent £400,000 adding to its fleet and announced that it planned to spend another £600,000 on new vehicles during the next 12 months.

However, that strategy has accelerated and the firm this month (October) has taken delivery of ten new vehicles which arrived on a double decker transporter.

This takes its total investment, in the last six months, to £1.1m with the additions to its fleet comprising 50 four door family saloon Skodas and 15 mini buses.

At the same time, Boro Taxis has recruited 65 drivers with another 35 potential drivers undergoing a training programme.

Those who pass the course and meet the necessary standards and regulatory checks will be guaranteed a job with Boro Taxis.

The private hire company, which was set up in 1982 by Mohammed Bashir with just three cars, now has a fleet that totals 750.

It also has a workforce of almost 900, which is made up of a mixture of direct employees and self-employed drivers, all of whom are fully trained.

Boro Taxis founder, Mohammed Bashir said: “Due to the levels of business we have been experiencing, we have had to accelerate our investment and recruitment plans, which is great news for the company, local employment and the Tees Valley in general.

“Boro Taxis has come a long way since it was established 30 years ago. Our commitment to investing in new quality vehicles, along with our attention to detail, especially in terms of customer care, are key factors in our success.

“From a small business, with just three vehicles, we now handle between 70,000 and 80,000 jobs per week.”

The investment is a combination of replacing vehicles and adding to Boro Taxis’ fleet.

All of Boro Taxis’ private hire drivers are licensed with the relevant Licensing Authorities and undergo National Vocational Qualification 2 training in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving.
