Jeremy Middleton, Chair of the North East Devolution Commission

The North East Devolution Commission (NEDC), the organisation founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Jeremy Middleton to generate ideas for a devolved North East, has launched policy papers covering nine areas of regional governance.

The papers published propose policies for a devolved North East covering the areas of, Health and Wellbeing, Jobs, Volunteering and Philanthropy, Governance, Taxation and Spending, Transport, Farming and Fishing, Planning and North East Identity. This follows the publication earlier in the year of the commission’s Skills paper.

North East residents are invited to visit the commission’s website, to read the proposed policies, which are also available for the region’s politicians, should a devolution deal be reached for all or part of the region.

NEDC founder, Jeremy Middleton, who has ruled out standing in any future mayoral elections and contributed to the papers along with other commission members, has pledged to continue to create ideas for a devolved North East in a new role at the Policy North think tank.

Jeremy Middleton said: “After months of talking about the issues we are delighted to make our policy papers available for the people and politicians of the North East, so they can inform the debate on any future devolution deal. While I personally won’t run in any future regional mayoral elections, I will still be contributing to the debate through Policy North.

“Taking transport as an example, more power for the North East could revitalise our economy by connecting people to jobs. We can’t prosper in isolation on a regional level, or when the communities people live in are poorly connected to where jobs are available. Our region’s leaders should be lobbying Westminster for to prioritise upgrades for the Tyne and Wear metro system, rather than building HS3, as better connectivity to areas like Ashington, Washington and Durham will have a more immediate economic impact.”
