Boro Taxis, one of the largest private hire firms in the UK, has been recognised with a prestigious award from the Tees Valley’s BME community.

The Middlesbrough-based firm was named as BME Business of the Year at the Tees Valley BME Achievement Awards, after beating off stiff competition. The other local businesses shortlisted were artisan coffee and desert restaurant De Melo, and the Silverlink Motor Company.

Boro Taxis nomination for the award stated: “Boro Taxis is Tees Valley’s largest private sector employer, providing an income to more than 1,000 people who drive under its livery and operate its contact centre.

“Founded by Mohammed Bashir in 1982 with just three cars, it has grown to be one of the largest private hire firms in the UK, handling more than 100,000 calls each week.

“Boro Taxis is also proud to give back to the people of Tees Valley and supports a large number of local charitable and sporting organisations.”

The first Tees Valley BME Achievement Awards were held in October 2009 to recognise the contribution that BME individuals and groups are making in the sub-region. Now an annual fixture, the awards raise awareness of BME communities in the Tees Valley, draw attention to their achievements, and act as a platform to promote community cohesion.

Mohammed Bashir, founder of Boro Taxis, said: “The event was full of amazing and inspiring stories, and all nominees were worthy winners in their own right, which is why it is such an honour to accept this award on behalf of everyone at Boro Taxis, from our drivers to the back office staff who keep the whole company going. We of course, owe our loyal customers an enormous debt of gratitude. Without them, there would be no Boro Taxis.

“Boro Taxis has come far in our 35 year history. When I started the business in 1982 we had just three cars and I didn’t even have a driving licence. We’re now the largest and most successful private hire business in the North East and one of the largest in the UK, making millions of journeys every year.

“The successes celebrated at the Tees Valley BME Achievement Awards are proof that through hard work, grit and determination there are opportunities for everyone to succeed and prosper, no matter what their background.”
