The Boro Taxis Race Night, held at Acklam Grange School, has raised more than £4,000 for a charity run by the school’s pupils.

The North East’s largest private hire firm sponsored a night of virtual races, with all money raised on the night going towardsthe U.K. registered charity, The Meserani Project.

The charity is run by Acklam Grange School pupils and supports the education of young people in the Meserani region of Tanzania.

The money raised from the race night will be used to build a secondary school. Currently pupils in the region who pass their primary school examinations either do not progress to secondary education or must attend boarding schools, which usually are considerable distances from their homes.

Christine Bell, Director at Boro Taxis, said: “Boro Taxis is proud to support the charitable endeavours of Acklam Grange School pupils.

“Education is a vital tool to escaping poverty, so it’s fantastic to see Teesside generosity and compassion being exported to help improve the life chances of those less fortunate.”

Lisa Connor, Head of Creative Arts at Acklam Grange, said: “We’re very grateful for the support of Boro Taxis and everyone who came to the race night. Together we have raised enough money to make a significant impact on the lives of Tanzanian schoolchildren.

“Last year, 584 young people in Meserani passed their national primary school examinations, but with no local secondary school, most will end their education there. By providing a secondary school we will be able to help those young people to further their learning, which has the potential to help transform the future of Meserani.”
