Duncan Bannatyne

Serial entrepreneur and philanthropist Duncan Bannatyne OBE, has issued a strong message of support to Martin Lewis, as the Money Saving Expert prepares a legal challenge to Facebook.

The Lewis lawsuit alleges defamation and will be a test case to establish if the social media giant is a publisher and needs to abide by laws that relate to defamation and libel.

Over recent years Mr Bannatyne’s image has been used on the type of advertisements known to appear on Facebook and other parts of the internet, that invite members of the public to invest in dubious get rich quick schemes. Attempts by Mr Bannatyne’s legal team to establish who was behind the scams drew a blank.

Duncan Bannatyne said: “Back in 2016 my name was used to promote a high-risk currency investment, this carried on for a while and then the scammers moved on to other celebrities. It’s been reported that Deborah Meaden, Richard Branson and Peter Jones are others whose identity has been hijacked in this way.

“Martin Lewis is very courageous taking on Facebook. Perhaps we should join together to bring a class action against them to try and halt this type of scam once and for all to stop ordinary people being duped.”
