Pacifica Group signs County Durham Climate Change Agreement

12/11/2021

Pacifica Group has joined a group of North East businesses to pledge to tackle climate change as part of a new initiative from Durham County Council.

To coincide with COP26, more than 70 attendees, including representatives from Durham County Council, Durham University, businesses, and the NHS, gathered at Beamish Hall to sign a new climate change agreement, announcing their commitment to work together to protect the environment.

The County Durham Climate Change Agreement is designed to create a strong and active partnership of organisations, which will work together to make real environmental progress.

It is hoped that following the launch many more organisations across the county will sign the pledge.

To support the agreement, a new website has been launched to encourage individuals, businesses and communities to come together and pledge to reduce their impact, www.climatecountydurham.org.uk

It features information on what local residents, businesses, children and young people, and community groups can do, as well as a pledge for individuals and Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to sign.

Pacifica Group is committed to contributing to addressing climate change through its range of service that include the installation of ground & air source heating systems, solar panels and home insulation. The group also repairs thousands of home appliances every week, reducing the amount of white goods going to landfill as well as taking part of an initiative to recycle fridges and freezers.

Signing the climate change pledge is also part of Pacifica Group’s strategy to minimise the environmental impact of its operations. On its journey to become a carbon neutral business, Pacifica Group has partnered with Forest Carbon to plant around 4,000 trees a year in the UK.

It is also reviewing its vehicle fleet to make the move towards electric and hybrid cars and vans.

Kevin Brown, CEO of Pacifica Group, said: “We are very proud to sign the pledge and play our part in County Durham’s ambitions to tackle climate change. Through the services we offer and the way we run our business we take climate change incredibly seriously and are committed to contributing to a low carbon economy, here on our doorstep in the North East, but also wherever we work across the UK.”

Cllr Mark Wilkes, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and climate change, said: “We are committed to doing all that we can to tackle climate change and we have made some really strong progress so far in addressing vital environmental issues. However, we have pledged to make our county carbon neutral, and to do this we need to work with partners and the community in a collective effort to achieve this target.”
