COTTINGHAM CARE HOME TURNS BACK TIME WITH MAGICAL MEMORY BOOKS

Magnolia House Residential Care Home in Cottingham is helping residents reminisce and recollect, with the help of some magical memory books.

The historical picture volumes, which include titles such as A 1940s Childhood, and A 1950s Childhood, are a talking point for staff and residents about their younger years.

Residents are encouraged to reminisce about the war and rationing, what it was like at school, gifts they received, and their family life. It’s also a chance to discuss other memories, such as the Swinging 60s, the 70s and beyond.

Memory activities and conversation are essential for older people, particularly those living with dementia, because they help to keep the brain active.

Sarah Carter, activities coordinator, said: “It’s very interesting because people from different areas of the country have different stories. We chat about who had a television in their home, or who had to go to their neighbours to watch the Queen’s coronation, or even where they watched the moon landing or England winning the World Cup.

“We talk about different jobs people had and what they did in their spare time - a lot of our residents enjoyed going to dances, especially on payday so they could spend their wages!”

Lindsay Altoft, home manager at Magnolia House, said: “We feel that it’s very important to get our residents talking about their lives, including their childhoods, teenage years, working life and about their families. It helps us to build a lovely community here at Magnolia House.”

One resident, Margaret, said: “I enjoy reminiscing, as I can share my life stories with people. I used to go dancing with my friends back then, and we used to make our own dresses to wear.”

Magnolia House is rated “good” in all areas by the Care Quality Commission.
