MYSTICAL MENAGERIE DELIGHTS ROTHERHAM CARE HOME RESIDENTS

Residents of a Rotherham care home got to snuggle with a snake, inspect an iguana, and meet a mouse when the mobile zoo came to visit.

Leanimal Mobile Zoo, a not-for-profit social enterprise focusing on animal-led education and therapy, visited Moorgate Croft, giving residents the opportunity to play with furry – and not so furry – friends.

The visiting critters included a skinny pig, which is a hairless Guinea pig, a snake, a rabbit, a mouse, a tortoise and an iguana.

Animal visits have been found to have multiple benefits to people in care homes, including reduced stress and increased happiness.

Jennifer Hololob, manager at Moorgate Croft, said: “Our residents and staff really enjoyed the visit from Leanimal Mobile Zoo and got to spend time with lots of different and exotic animals.

“The most unusual animal was the skinny pig and not many of us had ever seen one before. All the animals were very friendly though.

“At Moorgate Croft, we strive to provide interesting and engaging experiences for our residents to keep them active in body and mind. We know the residents loved seeing the animals and hope to have another visit from the zoo soon.”

Julie Thompson, a resident at Moorgate Croft, said: “I loved the animals coming to visit. The animals were very different to pets I’m used to, but it was a really fun experience. I hope they come back soon.”

Moorgate Croft is part of the Moorgate Care Village, which also includes Moorgate Hollow and Moorgate Lodge, and is rated “good” in all areas by the Care Quality Commission.
