The UK’s only fully inclusive annual black tie ball returns to Houghton Le Spring, with a sensory spectacle for people living with a range of complex disabilities.

The Kudos Ball, which is hosted by Salutem Care and Education, will welcome around 200 individuals it supports and staff from across the UK to Rainton Meadows Arena for the third year since its launch in 2018.

The event, which was postponed last year due to COVID restrictions, is based on the theme ‘from darkness into light’ and will feature performances from Sochara Dance Company, talented local dancer Harriet Jean Moralie, DJs and musicians String Infusion.

Attendees will also be designing lanterns, which will be paraded through the venue at the start of the ball.

The event will see the welcome return of host Colin Welding, who organises the event, and he will be joined by co-host Angela Merrifield, who is supported by Harmony House in Hebburn.

Colin said: “The Kudos Ball is designed to be a completely accessible, highly sensory, gala event for people with complex needs. The last two balls were roaring successes, with lots of buzz in the weeks leading up to them, and I have no doubt that this one will be the same.

“Many people living with complex disabilities never get the chance to put their glad rags on and enjoy a really fun and fancy black-tie event. We’re delighted to be able to host it again.

“I’d personally like to say a big thank you to my co-host, Angela, and to Jackie Carr, manager of Grizedale in Durham and Kelly Wilson, manager at Harmony House, for all their hard work behind the scenes. They work incredibly hard to make the ball run smoothly, and we couldn’t do it without them.”

John Godden MBE, CEO of Salutem Care and Education, added: “The Kudos Ball is a fantastic opportunity for everybody, whatever their background or capacity, to enjoy a proper, formal gala.

“At Salutem, we are determined to make every opportunity available to the individuals we support, because providing care isn’t just about day-to-day care, but about ensuring everybody can live their very best life.”
