WEST MIDLANDS COVID HERO RECOGNISED AT PRESTIGIOUS CARE INDUSTRY AWARDS

Leanne Bailey, a divisional support manager for Salutem Care and Education based in Nottingham, has been named as the winner of The COVID Hero Award in the Great British Care Awards for the East Midlands.

Leanne was nominated for the award after running a PPE hub for services across the Midlands, following the temporary closure of her own service, The Ark, in March 2020. She ensured there was adequate stock and would travel across the whole of the Midlands whenever new stock was required by a service, even when this was out of hours.

She also supported various local services that required additional staffing due to COVID, providing additional staff to ensure it could operate correctly, and acting as cover manager when this was needed.

Throughout the pandemic, Leanne has been a key contributor to Salutem’s COVID clinics, a regular call to ensure managers have the right information to give to the people they support and their families. Leanne continues to be part of this group, with the calls happening less frequently than they did last year.

The Great British Care Awards are a series of regional events throughout the UK and are a celebration of excellence across the care sector. The awards pay tribute to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding work within their field.

Leanne Bailey said: “Honestly, I was surprised to have even been nominated for this award, because I didn’t feel like I was doing anything particularly special.

“It was a strange job, because it wasn’t working directly with the people who use our service, and that’s really my driving passion, but I knew that by supplying the PPE, and the right staffing, to the services that needed it, it would help them too.

“It was longer hours than normal and very different to my usual job, but I didn’t feel any pressure or that it was a big ask, I just wanted to do everything I could to help. Everyone in the country that could was pulling their weight, so I was surprised to see that my role was seen as something exceptional.

“I’m, of course, delighted to have been recognised. It’s a huge honour.”

Leanne will be invited to attend the national finals of the Great British Care Awards in September.

John Godden MBE, CEO of Salutem Care and Education, said: “On behalf of the whole Salutem family, I’d like to congratulate Leanne for this extraordinary recognition.

“Leanne and her team’s dedication has really come to the fore over the past 18 months when they have gone above and beyond to offer every opportunity for the people we support to live their best lives.”
