CARE HOME RESIDENT KNITS HATS FOR BABIES AND CHILDREN IN NEED

31/05/2022

A resident of an Ely care home has been using her spare time to knit hats for a charity that provides help and support to babies and children.

Trudy Crawford, of Lily House in Lynn Road, Ely, is a member of the home’s knitting club and always is on hand to help teach others to become proficient with knitting needles.

The 92-year-old has made so many hats for charity that she has lost count of how many she has created.

Trudy, who knits a range of different sized hats to fit babies and children, donates them to the Inner Wheel Club of Ely. They then are distributed to children in need all over the UK and Europe.

Trudy has been supporting the Inner Wheel for two years and continued to do so when she moved to Lily House last September.

She said: “I have been knitting ever since I can remember. We don’t have lazy hands in my family.

“I find knitting relaxing and usually knit every day. When I heard about the Inner Wheel needing hats for babies and children, I thought it would be a good use of my time and skills.”

Trudy added: “I have lost count of the number of hats I have knitted during the last couple of years or so.”

She takes part in the home’s weekly knitting club where she helps other residents improve their knitting abilities.

She even is teaching the homes activities co-ordinator Joanne Swift to get creative with a pair of knitting needles.

Joanne said: “Trudy has the patience of a saint. I am not very good yet, but if I become half as adept as Trudy then I will be really pleased.”

Kerry Clifton, manager of Lily House, said: “We always try to encourage and help residents to pursue their hobbies and interests whatever their physical capabilities.

“It is great to see Trudy passing on her knitting knowhow to residents and staff as well as creating items for such a worthy cause.”

Lily House offers a wide range of elderly care, specialising in dementia, for up to 44 residents

It has an overall rating of good from the industry regulator, the Care Quality Commission.
