First cohort of appliance repair engineers achieve new City & Guilds assured Pacifica Group qualification

21/09/2022

Pacifica Group’s strategy to enhance skills within the domestic appliance repair industry is bearing fruit after the first cohort of its engineers successfully completed its new City & Guilds assured qualification.

The first 55 directly employed engineers, who are all among recent recruits to the business, together with a dozen self-employed engineers that work as part of the extended Pacifica Group network, have achieved the qualification.

The North East England-based company has more than 200 domestic appliance engineers operating across the country, repairing more than 350,000 home appliances each year.

Securing the accreditation for its established training programmes, coincides with Pacifica Group’s drive to recruit more engineers to meet demand for appliance repair.

Following the government’s Right to Repair legislation, which encourages repair over replacement, Pacifica Group has experienced an increase in workload.

The company works closely with a number of appliance manufacturers such as Electrolux, Sony, Hisense, Vestel, Howdens (Lamona) and LG along with major retailers including, Argos and Shop Direct, and insurance providers to provide repair and maintenance services.

Its training programmes, which cover the wide range of domestic appliances, are delivered at its specialist training centre in Washington, Tyne & Wear, and engineers undergo comprehensive practical training followed by frequent skills reviews encompassing new technologies and working practices.

Vikki Weston, head of human resources at Pacifica Group, who has worked closely with City & Guilds to secure the assurances for the training programmes, said: “Following the introduction of Right to Repair, there is increased demand for our services, and achieving a prestigious assurance for our bespoke training programme not only helps attract new engineers, but also gives our customers and the public additional confidence in the high quality of appliance repair we provide.

“This qualification will become standard for all our new engineers as they progress from induction to successfully working in people’s homes up and down the country.”

Recently qualified Appliance Engineer, Mark Lindsey said “The training I’ve received from Pacifica Group allows me to competently repair appliances including washing machines, dryers and fridges, as well as many others. The fact it is City & Guilds assured gives me added pride as I am part of a growing and increasingly important industry that is helping reduce waste by keeping appliances out of landfill.”
