Glasgow dad launches domestic appliance repair business

12/12/2023

A dad of three has set up his own business repairing domestic appliances, including washing machines and dishwashers, to meet an increase in demand across central Scotland.

Simon Docherty launched SD Appliance Repairs, which will cover Glasgow and surrounding areas, to help people save money and reduce their carbon footprint by extending the lifespan of their domestic appliances.

He will also partner with Pacifica, the UK’s largest white goods repair business, via its Pacifica Local model, to reach more customers in his area by utilising its client network and industry-leading technology platform.

The 45-year-old has an extensive career in engineering going back almost 26 years.

For eight years, Simon owned a laundry and dry-cleaning company. He subsequently became a sub-contracted engineer for Curry’s for five years followed by becoming a DPD franchisee.

A combination of the cost-of-living crisis and people becoming more environmentally aware, as well as manufacturers now being required to make spare parts available for certain appliances to help extend the lifespan of their products, have all fuelled demand for domestic repair experts.

Under current UK law, which came into effect in March 2021, manufacturers are legally required to ensure repair information and spare parts are available for up to 10 years for certain white goods and televisions.

Outside of work, Simon enjoys playing snooker, walking his dog, and spending time with his three grown-up children.

Simon said: “I have always been self-employed and wanted to try something different. After experiencing an increase in people opting to repair household appliances rather than replacing them, I decided to establish SD Appliance Repairs.

“In partnering with Pacifica Local, I can draw upon many years of experience of a large and respected business in the appliance repair sector, which will give me the support and infrastructure I need to grow my business and support more customers in my area.”

“The cost-of-living crisis is definitely hitting home. From new machines to spare parts, the costs have increased significantly. For example, the cheapest washing machine used to be £180; it now costs more than £220, and that’s not even the best one on the market.

Paul Feek, Chief Commercial Officer at Pacifica, says: “We can’t wait to see SD Appliance Repairs flourish. The combination of using Pacifica’s tried and tested processes and systems coupled with Simon’s hard work and expertise will ensure a winning combination that will serve the people of Glasgow and beyond well.”
