Children from Dormanstown Primary Academy enjoyed a Hallowe’en treat when they were welcomed by colleagues and volunteers to a very special harvest festival event at the Westfield Farm community resource and training centre in Redcar.

Like many organisations, Westfield Farm was forced to close its doors to the public during the Covid pandemic restrictions but was pleased to work in partnership with the local primary school to offer this exciting fun activity.

The visiting children enjoyed a lively art and craft session before looking around the farm gardens, seeing how a variety of fruit and vegetable produce is grown by the volunteers and later sold to raise funds for purchasing seeds and tools to help keep the project running.

One highlight of the day was the children picking out their own pumpkins to carve into spooky Hallowe’en lanterns.

Operated by Beyond Housing, Westfield Farm will once again be offering free computer use to jobseekers, a range of training opportunities and support with employment applications and interview preparation.

Barry McBride, Westfield Farm Coordinator, said: “It was great to see the farm come back to life after Covid with this seasonal Harvest Festival event. We were all excited to open our doors to the local community again.”

Joanne Boyes, Dormanstown Primary Academy teacher, added: “The children had an amazing time picking and carving pumpkins with the support of the kind and helpful staff at Westfield Farm.

“We also enjoyed looking for signs of autumn in the beautiful garden.”
