Six young women from across Redcar and Cleveland schools spent a day in the company of motivational ambassadors at Beyond Housing, as part of the Inspiring Women School Shadowing Experience.

The scheme, part of the Inspiring Women Awards which was launched in 2015 to commemorate the life and work of Mo Mowlam, encourages businesses across Redcar and Cleveland to provide shadowing opportunities for girls, in a bid to inspire them in their career path. Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council organise the shadowing experience in partnership with the Inspiring Women Steering Group, schools, and local businesses.

The Inspiring Women Awards are held every year in March, around International Women’s Day, to celebrate the achievements of local women and girls.

This year, Beyond Housing welcomed young women from Outwood Academy Bydales, Sacred Heart Catholic Secondary School, Laurence Jackson School, and Freebrough Academy to shadow female business leaders from across the business, including Chief Executive Rosemary Du Rose.

The young people worked alongside the women at Beyond Housing in Redcar, learning the skills and qualifications required for the varied roles available in housing.

This involved looking at internal communications, attending meetings with directors, discussing innovation and changes, and attaining sign off from internal stakeholders.

Rosemary Du Rose said: “I was delighted to welcome the young women to Beyond Housing to shadow some of the incredibly talented women we have working here.

“We participate in the Inspiring Women Awards every year, and I’m pleased that we’re now in a position to welcome girls into the office to further support the project.

“I would highly recommend the Inspiring Women Shadowing Experience to any local business, because it gives a chance for colleagues to be role models to girls within the community and prepare for the next generation of amazing female leaders.”
