Newcastle care home celebrates Dignity Day with heart-warming intergenerational event

06/02/2024

Ashton Court Care Home, in Newcastle, proudly hosted an enriching Dignity Day event with a local school, uniting young and old in a celebration of respect and self-worth.

This special day saw the children from Cannon Street Primary School, join the residents for a day filled with engaging conversations and joyful activities, highlighting the importance of intergenerational interaction.

The event also featured the innovative 'Dignity Tree', a thoughtful installation within the home. Residents were encouraged to express their personal interpretations of dignity by writing them on leaves, which were then hung on the tree. This heartening activity not only enhanced the space but also fostered a profound sense of self-worth among the residents.

Dignity Action Day is an annual initiative that underscores the significance of upholding the dignity of those receiving care. It is a day dedicated to ensuring that individuals in care are treated with the utmost respect, given control over their choices, and lead purposeful daily lives. Ashton Court's celebration of this day aligns perfectly with their commitment to providing exceptional care and support to their residents.

Nikki Foggin, the activities coordinator at Ashton Court, reflected on the event: "Dignity Day at Ashton Court was not just an event; it was a celebration of life, respect, and the shared experiences that bind us, young and old. Seeing the children interact with our residents was a poignant reminder of the joy and wisdom that can be shared across generations. It was a day that genuinely embodied the spirit of dignity in every aspect."

Ashton Court Care Home offers 42 en-suite rooms, four spacious living areas, and an array of amenities including a hairdressing salon with a nail bar, a full-service kitchen, and laundry facilities. The home spans four floors, featuring the traditional 'Ashton Arms' pub, a library, tea room, cinema room, and an on-site shop for added convenience. Its specialist AMI floor is particularly notable, offering a full sensory experience in an environment designed to promote cognitive development.

Ashton Court Care Home continues to stand as a pillar of support and care in the Newcastle community, embodying the values of dignity, respect, and compassion in every aspect of their service.
