Football in the community supports positive mental health

15/08/2023

A tenant supported by ECHO Supported Living Services in the Midlands has scored his 100th goal and both he and his support team are immensely proud. It was an aspiration for him and his support team and through perseverance and team work they have made it happen and compare themselves to The Band of Brothers. Through playing at Walsall the individual has made friends and scoring a 100 goals in 45 matches (competitive and practice) is a real achievement.

Lee, who lives at our Walsall supported living service, plays with Walsall FC’s Beat the Block football team.

Participants enjoy a one hour football session run by professional staff at the Poundland Bescot Stadium, before social time in the community room. In this safe and friendly environment, they can chat to coaches, each other and mental health professionals.

Lee thoroughly enjoys the sessions and was so proud to score a hattrick – we’re all so proud of him.

The Walsall FC Community Programme organise the ‘Beat the Block’ football sessions which are focused on promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. They are supported by the National Lottery Community Fund.
