Maintech Power delivers High Voltage infrastructure to power major bridge project

07/03/2024

Maintech Power, the High Voltage (HV) installation and maintenance specialist, has contributed to a new major UK infrastructure project by delivering power to a new bridge in Suffolk.

Appointed by main contractor Farrans, Ipswich-based Maintech Power designed and installed HV infrastructure to support the operation of the fully opening Gull Wing Bridge, which is currently under construction in Lowestoft.

The bridge will be the third crossing over Lake Lothing and has been commissioned by Suffolk County Council to provide improved connections between the north and south of the town.

Maintech Power supplied the site with a pair of 11kV package substations, with transformer capability of 11,000 to 415V, which is fed with a power supply from the UK electricity network.

Its engineers also installed Low Voltage (LV) infrastructure for the main LV intake to the site’s Switch Room, which involved a significant cable pull operation to cover the 60-metre distance between the substations and the Switch Room.

Liaising with the Distribution Network Operator, UK Power Networks, Maintech Power secured the electrical connection for the site to enable the project to be delivered within the timescale set within the bridge’s wider construction programme.

The connection and substations installation and commissioning were completed ahead of the site requiring power.

Richard Jupp, Divisional Director for Maintech Power, said: “We are exceptionally proud to contribute to such an important infrastructure project, especially as it has allowed us to apply our high voltage expertise and experience in our home region.

“We have worked in close collaboration with Farrans, its supply chain and UK Power Networks to deliver this project on time and on budget, ensuring the infrastructure is in place ready to accept power in line with the bridge’s construction programme.”

Tristram Browne, Project Manager at Farrans, said: “Gull Wing bridge is a very important project for our company. We have been working with our trusted supply chain to deliver a successful scheme which will deliver a positive, lasting legacy in Lowestoft. High voltage infrastructure requires highly competent expertise and Maintech Power has partnered well with us to provide this service.”
