GMI Construction supports campaign to raise awareness of male domestic abuse

04/11/2022

GMI Construction Group has helped raise awareness across of male domestic abuse with a series of on-site initiatives.

In association with The Mankind Initiative’s #MenYouAreNotAlone campaign, GMI held workshops, organised discussion groups and distributed advice and information on Supporting Male Victims of Domestic Abuse Day (2 November).

The Mankind Initiative is the principal, expert and specialist charity in the UK focusing on male victims of domestic abuse. It works in close partnership with other organisations and practitioners to help men experiencing abuse.

The GMI awareness sessions were held at its sites across the UK, including Hillthorn Business Park in Washington, Tyne and Wear, where the company is close to completing the first tranche of the Legal & General-backed £60 million scheme that comprises of industrial and advanced manufacturing space.

The sessions were led by domestic abuse specialists, building on the initiative’s focus of providing direct support to men and giving them a voice as well as providing support for organisations such as GMI.

Claire Preston, GMI Construction’s head of responsible business, said: “We take the welfare and wellbeing of our staff extremely seriously, which is why GMI is supporting The Mankind Initiative’s campaign.

“We hope that by raising awareness more people will recognise the signs of abuse, whether personally or among friends or family, and realise they are not alone and do not have to suffer in silence.

“It is important that men who experience domestic abuse know that there is help and support out there for them.”

“Mark Brooks, Chair of The ManKind Initiative charity, said: “It is brilliant news that GMI Construction is leading the way in the industry by getting behind this really important campaign.

“Giving as much information to their male colleagues across the business that if they are suffering from domestic abuse, they will be supported, taken seriously and that there is help. We need more employers to be showing this type of leadership.”

The Mankind Initiative also promotes the #WeCanStandWithHim campaign, which gives a voice to women who have been personally affected by men who have been victims.

This could be mothers, sisters, daughters, aunties, grandmothers, new partners, female friends, and colleagues, who may know first-hand the pain, anger and fear that the victim is experiencing.
