GMI lights up the Leeds skyline for Christmas in aid of Yorkshire children’s hospice

19/12/2022

GMI Construction Group has lit up the Leeds skyline for Christmas, with a special display in Sovereign Square to raise money for Martin House Children’s Hospice.

The Leeds-based company, which is one of the largest independent construction firms in the North of England and the Midlands, has decorated the site with thousands of Christmas lights, including covering a giant 44-metre tower crane in festive bulbs, which can be seen across the city centre.

The lights were officially switched on by a group of pupils from Little London Community Primary School in central Leeds who, with the help of Santa who made a guest appearance, also helped GMI staff collect donations from passing commuters and shoppers to support the children’s hospice.

Alongside donations collected on the day, donations were also being taken through a Just Giving page, which has already reached more than £500.

Passers-by were also treated to entertainment from the Yorkshire Oompah Band, who played a collection of classic Christmas tunes given a unique ‘Bavarian Oompah’ twist.

Decorating the site was the brainchild of GMI Construction site manager Allan Irvine who is overseeing the delivery of a 14-storey, 331-bedroom Hyatt Hotel on behalf of property management business Marrico.

Wanting to add a festive sparkle to this well-known part of Leeds and to raise money for the charity, Allan and his team have adorned the safety hoardings surrounding the 2,100 sq metre site with Christmas lights, with the centre piece of the site, the tower crane, glowing in a mix of pink, blue and yellow lights.

Martin House Children’s Hospice, which is based in Boston Spa, Wetherby, provides vital care and support for children and young people with life-shortening conditions from across the whole of Yorkshire.

Allan Irvine said: “We are a very festive bunch on this site and wanted to share some Christmas cheer with our neighbours and visitors to our amazing city. It’s also given us a chance to raise some money for Martin House, which is GMI’s chosen charity in Yorkshire and does so much fantastic work to help families in our region. It was also great to see the faces of the pupils from Little London Community Primary when they switched on the lights, it gave us some Christmas joy!”

Fran Bowman, headteacher at Little London Community Primary School, said: “The children absolutely loved helping to switch on the lights and be part of this festive fundraiser, particularly as it’s helping other Yorkshire young people who are supported by Martin House.”

Abigail Proctor, partnerships manager at Martin House Children’s Hospice, said: “The lights look absolutely amazing and the team from GMI have worked really hard to transform the site into a festive display. We are proud that GMI has chosen Martin House as its chosen charity and appreciate all the effort the company and its employees make to help raise funds to support the work we do in Yorkshire.”
