Morpeth care home up for award recognition

15/11/2023

Riverside House care home is in the running for another prestigious national award.

The Morpeth care home has been shortlisted in the Community Involvement category at the sixth annual Caring UK Awards, which recognise excellence and achievement within the care sector across the UK.

Last year Richard Dobinson, the home’s activities co-ordinator won Activities Team of the Year at the awards

Sam Armstrong, Regional Manager for Riverside House, said: “Well done to Richard, and the whole team at Riverside House. It’s so important that our homes and residents are part of a supportive local community and that is something Riverside House excels at with its many initiatives.”

An awards spokesperson said: “Never has there been a more appropriate time to recognise the amazing and selfless contribution that our carers make and how they have given so much to protect and care for their residents in the face of unprecedented challenges.”

The awards are organised by Script Events in conjunction with leading care industry magazine Caring UK, with support from headline sponsor Virgin Money.

In each category up to seven finalists have been selected and they will now go through to the next stage of the judging process.

The winners will be revealed at a glittering awards ceremony at The Athena in Leicester on Thursday, December 7 when the industry will gather to salute all that is great about the care sector.

The nomination:

Ensuring the people we support have the opportunity to remain active and engaged members of their local community, even after moving into care, is central to everything we do at Riverside House.

Over the past few years, our team have worked hard to ensure that our residents can maintain their strong sense of local identity both inside and outside of the home.

Richard Dobinson, activities coordinator, is the home’s community champion, and has established strong, enduring relationships with Morpeth town mayor, town council, the local football club, the town’s scout and guide groups, nurseries, and the Princes’ Trust to name a few, many of which visit our residents regularly.

Our home has hosted two annual summer fairs in its grounds, drawing over 800 people to the most recent event. This featured 30 stalls from across the community, including the Fire Service and fire engine, army and air cadets, the blood bike team, and a performance from the Morpeth Scottish Pipe Band and dancers. The fair raised money for Morpeth Mental Health Group, the Rotary Club and the residents’ activities fund.

This year, our dementia choir, ‘The Forget Me Not Choir’, set themselves a challenge to perform for the local community at St James’ Community Hall in Morpeth. One hundred local people, including dignitaries and children and families from Goose Hill Nursery, who regularly visit the home as part of its intergenerational community work, attended the concert.

The home’s latest community initiative, the ‘Chatty Café’, offers a safe space for local people from all ages and backgrounds, to take make new friends and enjoy the company of others. The Riverside House residents participate weekly at the Pavilion Café in the local park.

The Riverside family have also started work with Morpeth Poetry Group to publish a poetry booked based on residents’ life experiences.
