Blairgowrie Care Home Resident Celebrates 100 Years of a Life Well-Lived

07/03/2024

A Blairgowrie care home resident celebrating her 100th birthday says enjoying everything in moderation and making a positive impact on your community is the key to a long and happy life.

Muirton House Care Home pulled out all the stops for Marjorie Scott’s special birthday, with her family invited to a party at the home, during which she was presented with a card from King Charles and Queen Camilla before tucking into cake and tea.

Marjorie was born in Gosforth in 1924 before heading north of the border to be educated at St George’s School for Girls in Edinburgh.

A lifelong passion for service to society saw her join the Voluntary Aid Detachments in London at the conclusion of the Second World War. Later in life, Marjorie remained committed to doing her part to help others and was very involved with her local Church of Scotland congregation’s community work. She was known amongst locals for her beautiful floral arrangements, with the annual daffodil charity tea a highlight of her social calendar.

In 1950, Marjorie tied the knot with Raymond Scott, a jute manufacturer from Dundee with whom she built a life and a wonderful home in Rosemount, raising three sons - Malcolm, Ranald, and Euan, who in turn gave her eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, to dote upon.

When asked the key to a long and happy life, Marjorie said: “A life lived for others is a life well spent. I have never been one to overindulge and always enjoyed life’s treats in moderation. My Christian faith has always been important to me, and I have always tried to help others where I can through my involvement with the Church of Scotland. I think that is very important that you should be do your utmost to live a good life, help people if you are able to and make the world - or even your little town or village - a better place.”

Sandra Reilly, manager at Muirton House care home, which is operated by Larchwood Care, wished Marjorie well, saying: “Everyone at Muirton House wishes Marjorie a very happy birthday. It’s been heart warming to see her family here celebrating with her. There’s been such love in the room today!

“It’s been an honour to be part of the day and hear some stories from Marjorie and her family from when they were younger. She’s certainly still a strong character and a valuable part of the community at Muirton House.”
