Fraser Brown warns lengthy 2030 roll back could have serious consequences for UK’s EV development

20/09/2023

Fraser Brown, the founder and managing director of automotive consultancy MotorVise, said: “It introduces uncertainty into a market that doesn’t need uncertainty, and which could have unintended consequences.

“The automotive industry requires consistency, given there is lengthy development lifecycle for vehicles before they even get to market. I hope this decision does not affect the programme of investment and development in both battery manufacturing plants and electric vehicle production in the UK.

“We must allow the manufacturers to gear up for all electric vehicles as any lengthy delay will hand a major advantage to foreign importers, such as the Chinese, who are already well ahead of the game.

“The EU’s ban on the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars is due in 2035. It would be logical for the UK to revert to this date. However, any further delay will have serious consequences for the development of the technology in this country.

“The government must continue to support the switch to EV. However, walking back the ban to 2035 will provide further time to improve the charging infrastructure, particularly the introduction of public kerbside chargers in areas without off street parking.”
