Viagra survey ‘unfair’ to modern car salesmen, says Fraser Brown

15/11/2022

A report that car salesmen take more Viagra-type drugs than any other profession may be wide of the mark, says Fraser Brown of MotorVise.

I’d certainly be interested in examining the scope and accuracy of this survey by online betting company freebets.com, as it certainly doesn’t appear representative of the sales teams working at the heart of today’s modern dealerships.

For one thing, automotive sales are undergoing a cultural transformation as the industry moves away from the stereotypical images of the 1970s and 80s – when the problem, if anything, was far too much testosterone!

These days dealerships are focused on addressing the historical gender inequality of sales teams and simply providing customers with a fantastic retail experience.

Adopting a more measured and less aggressive approach to customer service not only increases sales but surely, given the growing number of women being recruited, should also mean a sharp fall in demand for Viagra-like products within the showroom.

The report, published in a leading tabloid, quoted that more than a third of car salesmen are popping the blue pill – which is surely wide of the mark.

MotorVise is experienced in assisting dealerships to recruit staff by arranging automotive recruitment events, organising everything from advertising to leading the assessment day.

What we look for are those people with the right skills and attitude that allow them to excel in the sales role. To do this we arrange group and individual exercises that reveal candidates’ strengths, weaknesses, and true personality.

What dealerships require is relatable sales people able to understand customers’ requirements.

Such stories surrounding Viagra appear pure clickbait. Similar statistics have also been applied to car ownership in the past few weeks, with reports in the national media [i]that BMW owners (28%) are most likely to need a bedroom boost, with Toyota (5%) and Vauxhall (6%) owners least likely to reach for the blue pill.

There have even been attempts to highlight the divide among Premiership fans [ii]– with supporters of Chelsea (20%), Arsenal (19%) and Southampton (18%) said to be most likely to use Viagra-style products.

Unfortunate then for the car salesman who not only supports Chelsea but also drives a BMW!

On a serious note, erectile problems affect up to 21% (4.3m) men in the UK and I don’t believe such reports are at all helpful. It’s that same inconsiderate attitude that thankfully a new generation of car salespeople are leaving well behind.
