NTG Group builds on energy sector expertise to support next generation of industry projects

23/08/2023

As the energy sector continues to evolve to secure sustainable and equitable energy generation and usage for the coming decades, the UK supply chain has a vital role to play.

With the industry focused on energy security, increasing generation from renewable sources, energy security and enhanced production performance, it requires a robust and innovative, UK-based cluster of suppliers that can be agile and deliver innovation products, services and skills to support a diverse range of projects.

With the establishment of offshore wind as a major contributor to the energy mix, alongside the emergence of hydrogen and carbon capture and storage, there is also the important oil & gas sector, which still has a key contribution to make that has been acknowledged by the UK government with a commitment to future licencing rounds.

As a result, the industry is continuing to develop its relationships with the supply chain against a backdrop of increasing sustainable operations across the sector, both environmentally and through efficient operations.

NTG Group, the North East-based precision engineering group, which contains NTG Precision Engineering and ABS Precision Engineering, has a track record of supplying OEMs, tier 1 and 2 contractors and manufacturers in the industry and recognises how an evolved supply chain is required to support a modern energy industry.

“Over the years we have gained specialist knowledge of industry requirements, but we have also evolved to be able to not only react to current needs, but help support customers in the sector with innovations and agile operations,” said Mike Hutchinson, group managing director.

“Sustainability is a key driver in the industry, as the sector aims to develop operations to reduce environmental impact through more sustainable operations. This includes the activities of its supply chain and is something we are very conscious of at NTG Group.”

This is evident at the Group’s two production facilities. NTG Precision recently moved into a brand new, purpose-built factory in Gateshead, creating additional capacity and scope for new technology and production efficiencies while ABS’s nearby facility has undergone significant refurbishment and investment in new capabilities.

The new facility also contributes to the group’s sustainability credentials. The 45,000 sq ft facility is part-powered by Solar PV and utilises air-sourced heating. It also has a number of electric vehicle charging stations.

Creating additional capacity, the facility is also home to new technologies that supports highly efficient precision engineered component manufacture, which the Group helps its customers take from prototype to production.

“The investments we have made across the Group, both in facilities and technology, alongside our highly experienced and skilled workforce enables us to be very agile and responsive to customer requirements,” said Mike.

“A major focus in the industry is reduced lead times and we have worked hard to ensure we have the infrastructure and capabilities to meet project timetables. This has earned us a first-rate reputation for quality and reliability within the subsea, offshore and ROV component manufacturing industries.”

Faster delivery times is a fundamental part of reshoring – the relocation of production back to the domestic market, with NTG Group representing how suppliers can effectively position themselves to support this practice.

This approach has enabled the NTG Group to build strong presences in multiple industries, in addition to the energy sector including defence, food production and electric vehicle manufacturing.

“OEMs and tier 1 and 2 contractors are looking for highly responsive and innovative suppliers in their domestic markets that can quickly and effectively support production programmes and project delivery,” said Mike.

“We have made this a strategic focus for the Group, which has enabled us to become the manufacturing partner of choice for many of our customers.”
