NTG Group’s ‘prototype to production’ strategy drives forward EV components partnerships

20/06/2023

The NTG Group has continued to enhance its capabilities to support the Electric Vehicle industry with the production of precision engineered components for across the EV drivetrain.

Across the group’s two companies, NTG Precision and ABS Precision, there is more than a decade’s experience in the EV market.

In the past five years in particular, the Group has been working with a mix of start-ups and university spin outs through to international automotive companies, to support the development and production of EV drivetrain technology.

“Across the sectors we operate, the NTG Group aims to be our customers’ partner of choice with relationships that can take their components from prototype to production,” said Mike Hutchinson, Managing Director of NTG Group.

“This is particularly the case in the Electric Vehicle market, which is developing at pace as Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and their supply chains disrupt and evolve the automotive industry with drive train components that improve the range and capabilities of EVs.”

Alongside its work in the passenger car market, NTG Group has also developed relationships in the high-performance vehicles sector as well as the off-highway sector, which is aiming to tackle the significant challenge of transitioning machinery and heavy plant equipment away from predominately diesel-fuelled internal combustion engines to electric motors.

“When an industry is faced with such a major shift as has been the case in the automotive sector’s move to electrification it requires the support of an agile and dynamic supply chain that can not only deliver on its customers’ requirements, but also contribute to the development of the technologies,” explained Mike.

“We form close relationships with our clients, which are in different positions in the EV supply chain to help them maximise on the concept of their technologies with programmes that take them from early concepts through to full production, all of which we have the capabilities and capacity to undertake.”

This is very evident at the Group’s two production facilities. NTG Precision has recently moved into a brand new, purpose-built factory in Gateshead, North East England, creating additional capacity and scope for new technology and production efficiencies while ABS’s nearby facility has undergone significant refurbishment and investment in new capabilities.

Working in close collaboration with its customers, the Group is able to rapidly introduce and scale up new process and precision assembly capabilities that can be dedicated to production of an OEM’s components.

This is supported by a programme of investment in new technologies, which recently includes a Mazak i800 simultaneous 5-axis machining centre, followed by the installation of a Matsuura H.Plus-405 multi-pallet horizontal machining centre and larger turning capacity with a Doosan 700LM II Turning centre.

NTG Group is exhibiting at the Vehicle Electrification Expo at the NEC, Birmingham (28th & 28th June) on stand 811.
