People are eating out less and enjoying more home cooked meals in a bid to beat the financial squeeze, says Paul and Andrea Clark of oven cleaning specialists Ovenu Warrington.

While the husband and wife team has seen no let-up in demand for their services, a recent Barclays survey found spending in restaurants fell by 5.1% in March compared to a 7.1% increase in the grocery spend. The British Retail Consortium also reported a decline in dining out.

“There does seem to be a move towards cooking at home more to save money,” said Paul. “People recognise that using their oven can be really cost effective, while keeping it clean and well maintained improves its efficiency and helps extend its lifespan.”

Andrea added: “We’ve already seen a shift towards a ‘make do and mend’ attitude, with a greater willingness for clients to buy second hand or hold onto their cooker for much longer before replacing it with the latest model.

“A thorough professional clean can transform an oven to near showroom condition and improves the taste of food. It also benefits the environment by reducing the number of appliances ending up on the scrap heap.”

It’s recommended an oven that's used regularly is cleaned at least twice a year to avoid a build-up of grease and burnt food which sticks to hot plating, grills, and metal trays.
