An electrical mechanic once responsible for ensuring the multi-million pound Sea Wolf surface to air missile system remained operational aboard his ship is now involved in a very special launch of his own.

For Peter Williams, who spent six years in the Royal Navy as a weapons specialist, has accepted a new mission as owner of oven cleaning service, Ovenu Plymouth North.

Despite the pandemic, the father-of-two decided to achieve a long-held ambition to become his own boss, starting the venture from scratch.

He said: “With my forces background, I take real pride in keeping equipment sparkling clean and in shipshape condition – and that includes ovens!

“Being my own boss enables me to take control of my career and create a better work life balance, allowing me to spend more time with my family.”

On leaving the Royal Navy, which included deployments to the West Indies and the Gulf, which involved searching vessels for drugs and weapons, he became an IT contractor operating throughout the UK.

While taking a break in his hometown of Plymouth, he met future wife Melanie, and joined the city’s Europcar branch as fleet manager.

The 49-year-old said: “Despite the pandemic, I’m confident I can quickly establish and grow the business. I’m highly organised and have a mindset that demands the highest level of service.”

Peter is accepting bookings at his discretion, with the strict stipulation that both parties observe a two-metre social distancing rule, along with guidelines on hygiene and cleanliness.

Rik Hellewell, founder and managing director of the Ovenu franchise, said: “Peter has all the necessary attributes to make his business a success and, given his past experience with missile systems, I’m sure he’ll soon be on everyone’s radar!”

The business covers North Plymouth, including Pennycross, Barne Barton, Bickleigh, Crownhill, Woolwell, and surrounding areas.

The Ovenu valeting process involves dismantling key components of an oven such as the door, interior panels, fan, and shelves and placing them into design-registered tank equipment, which uses safe, non-caustic and biodegradable products to clean the oven parts.
