Tweaking cooking techniques can lower energy costs, says Andrew Bowcott of Ovenu Telford South

Householders can make significant savings on energy bills simply by ‘cooking smarter,’ says Andrew Bowcott of Telford-based oven valeting service Ovenu Telford South.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, around four percent of home energy bills are generated from powering kitchen appliances, including hob, oven, microwave, and kettle.

However, Andrew says there are several ways that householders can reduce their bills simply by tweaking their cooking habits.

These include:

  • Cooking several dishes at once, rather than heating an oven for one item
  • Not opening the oven door to check on food, which significantly lowers the temperature
  • Carry-over cooking. Using residual heat to finish cooking your dish by turning an oven off five minutes early
  • Preheating an oven is essential but don’t lose track of time. It should take around 15 minutes
  • Chop and slice food into smaller pieces so they cook faster
  • Use glass or ceramic oven dishes which retain heat better than metal
  • Use a fan assisted or convection oven which circulates heat for shorter cooking times
  • Defrosting meat or frozen meals in the fridge overnight can halve cooking times
  • Keep your oven clean and well maintained
  • Leave the oven door ajar once you’ve finished and use the residual heat to warm your kitchen

Andrew said: “The kitchen is at the heart of every home and an oven is an integral part of that. However, by thinking ahead and cooking in a much smarter way people can use their ovens more effectively and efficiently, which in turn will reduce energy bills.

“As well as improving the taste of your food, deep cleaning an oven makes a major contribution to reducing energy consumption by enabling it to reach the desired temperature faster and distribute the heat more efficiently.

“A regular professional clean can also extend the life of an oven. For example, grease in a fan oven can quickly build up everywhere, due to the way the air circulates. If left uncleaned it can make its way into the fan motor causing it to slow or seize – damaging the fan switch or printed circuit board, which is very expensive to repair.

“Likewise, a build-up of grease can also compromise door seals, allowing heat to escape, as well as disrupting the temperature sensor.”

Rik Hellewell, founder and managing director of Ovenu, added: “Having your oven regularly cleaned will allow it to work more effectively and use less energy.

“However, we all need to think about modifying our cooking techniques to save even more and these tips really provide food for thought!”

The Ovenu process involves dismantling key components such as the door, interior panels, fan, and shelves and placing them in design-registered tank equipment, which uses safe, non-caustic and biodegradable products, leaving the oven in a near showroom condition.
