LOCAL EAST RIDING CARE HOMES COMMEMORATE ARMISTICE WITH A VISIT FROM THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

11/11/2022

The residents of Magnolia House in Cottingham and The Manor House in rural Little Weighton observed a reflective and respectful Armistice Day when they were visited by Jerry Cross, Commander and Standard Bearer and Gary Fraser, Secretary and Poppy Member from Cottingham Branch, The Royal British Legion.

The residents and staff of the East Riding care homes, which offer residential, respite and dementia care, welcomed the poignant and emotional remembrance service. The Last Post was played, and the two-minute silence allowed residents to honour their loved ones who served in the armed the forces.

This is the third time Cottingham Branch, The Royal British Legion conducted Remembrance Day services at the homes – an annual tradition which began when residents were prevented from attending public services due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

For residents and staff unable to attend the main services on Sunday, the occasion gave them involvement in local Remembrance proceedings and the opportunity to show first hand their gratitude to the fallen.

Sarah Carter, activities coordinator at Magnolia House said: “The Royal British Legion has been visiting us for a few years and it was lovely to have the volunteers at the home again to conduct such a special service.”

She added: “Earlier in the morning we had prayers and hymns and at 11am held our two-minute silence to remember those who fought bravely in wars past and present.”

Mavis a resident at Magnolia House said: “It was a lovely service and very touching.”

Leanne Hatch, registered manager at The Manor House said: “The visit from Cottingham Branch, The Royal British Legion means a lot to our residents with many of them remembering family and friends who lost their lives serving in the armed forces.”

Gary Fraser, Secretary and Poppy Member of Cottingham Branch, The Royal British Legion said: “We are so pleased to visit each year, the residents appreciate the opportunity to remember. It is so important now that none remain from WWI and fewer remain from WWII, we don’t forget their sacrifice.”
