Residents of Astune Rise Care Home in Eston spent an afternoon sailing along the River Tees aboard the Teesside Princess while enjoying afternoon tea.

Dressed in their finest, the thirteen residents departed Stockton and travelled down the Tees on a return trip to Yarm. They were joined by family members and staff from the home and also celebrated Doreen’s 91st birthday with a cake.

The trip was organised by home manager Caroline Bowstead, who plans a variety of activities such a Christmas performance, Valentines Day surprises and more recently opened up a new residents’ shop inside the home.

She said “This has been a work in progress for more than three years and I’m thrilled that we’ve finally been able to pull it off. In preparation for the special voyage residents had their hair cut, nails done and many of our ladies even tried on hats for their outfits!

“Our residents have had a fantastic day out on the Tees and I’m glad that we have been able to make this happen and take our residents on a fantastic trip.

One residents’ family member said “The (home) does lots of events, they’re always doing something. It’s really lovely”.

Tom,a resident at Astune Rise Care Home said “This is the first time I’ve sailed on the Teesside Princess; I’ve seen it up and down the river for many years and now I’m finally a passenger!

“The home is always pushing the boat out with activities, so I’m excited to see what is next!”
