EGGLESCLIFFE YOUNGSTERS LAY HOMEMADE POPPIES FOR ARMISTICE DAY

10/11/2022

Children from Rosedene Egglescliffe paid a visit to the war memorial on Butts Lane to lay handmade poppies for Armistice Day.

The nursery provider, which operates in Tees Valley and North Yorkshire, invited children from its 10 settings to make poppies out of twigs and yarn, and the collection was taken to the memorial ahead of Remembrance Day.

Rosedene practises curious learning, which sees children learn a range of life skills through different activities, including exploratory play and trying new experiences. With a focus on learning about the natural world, the children were encouraged to use ‘found’ materials, such as recycled wool and fallen twigs.

The children also talked about why Remembrance is important and the value of working as part of the community.

Jodie Hutchinson, manager at Rosedene Egglescliffe, said: “The children from several Rosedene settings have worked really hard to make poppies for us to take to the war memorial today. We’re really proud to be able to show our respect to the people who served our country.

“The Egglescliffe war memorial is a local landmark that some of our children walk by every day. It’s so important that we have the opportunity to acknowledge and show respect to the people named on it.

“Throughout the year we do many activities to give back to the community, and the children know that we’re doing something that will make our neighbours smile.

“At Rosedene, we practise curious learning, and encourage the children to learn through exploratory play and new experiences, particularly using objects found in the natural world. This was why we wanted to make these particular poppies and bring them here today.”

Egglescliffe Rosedene is an OFSTED Outstanding rated setting.
