Teesside nursery boss to take on 'Ride of Their Lives' for Macmillan Cancer Support

08/03/2024

Alice McCullagh, managing director of Rosedene Nurseries, is gearing up for an exhilarating challenge as she prepares to compete against 11 other horse riders in the Macmillan Cancer Support ‘Race of Their Lives’ later this year.

Until the race in June, the nurser boss will dedicate her mornings to rigorous training sessions in the gallops in Middleham at Ben Haslam Racing’s facility.

The Macmillan Charity Raceday stands as the oldest and largest event of its kind in the country, having raised over £10 million in its 52-year history for individuals and families affected by cancer. Alice’s participation is personally significant, as she honours the memory of her grandfather, Mike McCullagh who was known locally for chairing Middlesbrough Football Club, and who sadly lost his battle with a brain tumour in 2004.

The highlight of the Macmillan Charity Raceday is the Macmillan ‘Ride of Their Lives’ race, in which 12 amateur jockeys, including Alice, will race across York Racecourse. This event draws in 25,000 spectators who come together to cheer on these brave riders as they take on the challenge of a lifetime.

Alice McCullagh, who is the managing director of Teesside and North Yorkshire Rosedene Nurseries, said: “This race is not just about competition; it's about supporting a critical and incredible charity that provides vital assistance to families affected by cancer.

“As cancer touches the lives of so many, I am determined to do my part in raising awareness and funds for this cause.”

With a collective fundraising target of £100,000, the riders are rallying support from their communities to make a meaningful difference to the lives of those battling cancer. For Alice, this will include a series of fundraising activities at her family’s ten nursery settings across Teesside, East Cleveland and North Yorkshire. This recently included a series of animal visits, with children at the nurseries meeting a variety of farm animals including donkeys, goats and lambs.
