Beaumont College Sussex students embark on culinary world tour, from Indian spices to Turkish delights

17/04/2024

Students at Beaumont College Sussex, part of Salutem Care and Education, have been delving into the rich and diverse world of international cuisine, as part of their ongoing Skills for Life sessions.

Following a recent vibrant exploration of Indian cuisine, the students ventured into the flavours of Turkey, demonstrating remarkable independence and engagement with the local community.

Students recently visited a local Turkish restaurant, expanding their culinary horizons. This outing was not only a chance to taste different world foods but also an opportunity to apply practical life skills. They impressed support staff by independently reading the menu, managing their budgets, and interacting confidently with the restaurant staff.

The restaurant staff were commended for their exceptional service and accessibility, ensuring a memorable and inclusive experience.

The educational journey began in February at a local spice shop in Crawley, where students delved into the colourful and aromatic universe of Indian food. They learned about various spices and ingredients, leading to the preparation of a series of Indian dishes, including onion bhajis, keema curry, and Bombay potatoes. The fruits of their labour were savoured at a special lunch, filling the college with enticing aromas and showcasing the students' culinary skills.

This initiative is part of Beaumont College Sussex's commitment to providing a person-centred curriculum that supports the development of young adults with physical and learning disabilities, aged 18-25 years.

Nicola Dodds, senior leader of Beaumont College Sussex, expressed her enthusiasm for the project: "Our students' journey from exploring the intricate flavours of Indian cuisine to the rich tastes of Turkey exemplifies our commitment to offering a diverse and enriching educational experience. These outings are invaluable in not only teaching practical life skills but also in fostering a sense of independence and confidence in our students. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and grateful to the local businesses that have welcomed and supported us."

Beaumont College Sussex, nestled within the scenic grounds of Salutem's Ingfield Manor School, continues to forge pathways for students wishing to extend their educational journey beyond traditional settings. Through initiatives like these, the college reinforces its dedication to creating learning experiences that prepare students for a bright and independent future.
