BEDFORD CHILDREN’S HOME PRAISED BY OFSTED

31/05/2023

A Bedford children’s home, operated by Salutem Care and Education has been rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted following a recent inspection.

The name and exact location of the home is not being revealed to protect the identity of the vulnerable children who live there.

The inspection team looked at the overall experiences and progress of the children, taking into account how well they are helped and protected and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.

The report noted that ‘Children receive personalised care. Staff find creative ways to help children with daily routines. Staff understand the importance of children having independence with their personal care. Staff were observed giving children choices, being patient and kind, and genuinely showing care for the children.’

A child’s teacher spoke highly of the home to the inspector and the significant improvements that she has seen in the child’s health, well-being and confidence since they moved in to the home. The teacher said, ‘They are like a different child; it is just amazing.’

The report also stated that ‘Children are encouraged to spend time with their families and friends. A parent said, ‘The staff are amazing. I cannot fault the manager.’ Children spend time with people who are important to them. Children enjoy fun activities at the home and in the community. These include swimming, yoga, walking in parks and visiting the zoo. The manager is in the process of booking a holiday to the seaside for the children. Children have enriching experiences that help to build their self-esteem.’

Karen Jackson, Divisional Director - Childrens at Salutem said: “This report is testament to the dedication of the manager and her team and the hard work that has gone into improving the rating from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’. Our ethos focuses on ensuring that every individual we support has the opportunities to achieve the very best outcomes, and the children we support are no different.

“It is fantastic to see the comments from the inspector and from others close to the children, which reinforce the care and support they are receiving and the fulfilling lives they are leading.

“I am very proud of everyone involved.”
