COLCHESTER CHILDREN’S HOME PRAISED BY OFSTED

29/06/2023

A Colchester children’s home, operated by Salutem Care and Education has been rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted following a recent inspection.

The name and exact location of the home is not being revealed to protect the identity of the vulnerable children who live there.

The inspection team looked at the overall experiences and progress of the children, taking into account how well they are helped and protected and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.

The report noted that ‘The staff build positive relationships with children. Children have enjoyed activities that they have chosen. One child went to their first live concert this year and said that they ‘loved it’. Another child went to a transgender event in London, which they enjoyed. Giving children the opportunity to take part in events that they have chosen helps them to build their identity.’

The inspector highlighted the commitment staff have to the children they support and the stability this brings saying ‘The staff have shown commitment to a child who has been at the home since last year, despite some challenges. They are working with a wider team to create a plan of support. This helps to increase stability for children.’

The report also stated that ‘Children’s moves to the home have been planned and thought out. One child’s social worker complimented the child’s staged move into the home. The group impact risk assessment for the current group considered the relevant information. This planning enables staff to organise the support that the children will need.’

It was also noted that ‘Staff support children to access education. The staff work with the virtual school’s headteacher and the child’s education provider. Education plans are tailored to each child’s individual needs.’

Karen Jackson, Divisional Director - Childrens at Salutem said: “This report highlights the commitment of the manager and their team who have worked tirelessly towards improving the rating from requires improvement to good.

“Our core values centre around providing equal opportunities for all the children we support, enabling them to attain the best possible outcomes.

“It is great to see this feedback, which demonstrates the hard work and positive impact we have on the children and I’m proud of everyone involved”.
